I’ve always been inspired by the landscape of the Pacific Northwest, and now living here for a brief stint, it never grows tired. I love driving over the crest of a hill and discovering a snow-capped mountain on a clear day. On dreary afternoons, mist lingers between each elevation of trees, creating its own subtle gradation.

That sense of depth and atmosphere is what I aimed to capture in this reduction linocut print. The image was carved from a single piece of linoleum, with material removed layer by layer to build the shifting planes of the forest. In the process, the linoleum is slowly destroyed, making each reduction print a true limited edition.

This 12 × 18 print was run through the press nine times on a Vandercook Universal 4 at Partners in Print in Seattle, Washington.
